5 Wonderful Things We Take for Granted

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

1. Choices

To read this article or to not read this article? Study or sleep? Pancakes or waffles? Spend or save? Every day, we are able to make choices like these, and much of our lives are defined by the choices we make. Our choices allow us to do what we prefer, and although other people can sometimes influence them, we ultimately decide our choices for ourselves.

2. Imagination

From little daydreams during class to professional works of art, our imagination has the ability to consume our minds and turn our thoughts into reality. Creativity and innovation depend on our imagination. It sparks ideas for everything that people design and invent. Without it, we’d be living plain, boring lives with no new versions of the iPhone every year, no new styles of clothing, and no variety in the world around us.

3. Memories

Every living moment we’ve had on this planet becomes memories. What you had for breakfast this morning, what you did over spring break, and your first day of kindergarten are all memories that you are able to go back to, and without them, we would lose everything that makes us who we are as individuals.

4. Free time

The time that we have to do what we enjoy keeps us sane. If our lives were consumed by school, work, and other activities that devour all our time, we’d be miserable human beings. Free time gives us time to ourselves and allows us to detach, even if just temporarily, from the crazy, fast-paced world around us.

5. Music

Music is the universal language of the world. People compose music, play music, and listen to music every single day. Music allows us to express ourselves and has the ability to change our mood in ways that nothing else can. Music makes life something more than a monotone dialogue between people.
