This Twitter Hashtag Needs to Be Recognized by Everyone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

A few days ago, a hashtag called #AbledsAreWeird started trending on Twitter. People of different backgrounds came forth reflecting on their experiences as being a disabled person and their negative interactions with abled people. This hashtag was started to highlight the discrimination these individuals face and how some abled people do not recognize how their interactions reside with them.

This hashtag, of course, faced backlash from some abled individuals because nowadays people just don’t know how to listen. If these individuals are speaking of their experiences and how abled people in those situations have marginalized them, listening is the first step to realizing your faults. Sometimes people say things and don’t necessarily notice the malicious undertones to their words. Hopefully, people will start to understand this and take that initiative to listen. You should start by looking at the hashtag and reading their stories.
