Something to Keep in Mind When it Gets Cold

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clark chapter.

Like most of us, I hate the cold. My face hurts, my glasses fog, then freeze, then fog again, and I can’t feel my toes. But whereas I am just walking to class on a campus that I fondly refer to as a postage stamp, there are too many people who are stuck outside in the cold.

In Chicago, 21 people have died so far during this polar vortex. The polar vortex is a likely a symptom of climate change and severe weather like it may continue getting worse.

In weather like this, people without a home suffer immensely. Here are some organizations that deal with homelessness that could use your help this winter.

1) National Alliance to End Homelessness: an organization that works to prevent and end homelessness in the US.

2) Warren Village: strives to help low-income, single-parent families create sustainable personal and economic self-sufficiency.

3) Abby’s House: a special organization for Clark’s Her Campus Chapter, we’ve done fundraisers for them before. Their goal is “to provide shelter and affordable housing, as well as advocacy and support services, to homeless, battered, and low-income women, with or without children.”

To find local organizations near you, utilize the services provided by your school or simply see what else Google has to offer, during cold weather snaps like this, they need your help more than ever.
