My Favorite Authors that Write about Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

For the last seven years of my life I have been an avid reader, and there are few things I love to read about more than love. With summer vacation quickly approaching, I can barely contain my excitement knowing I will have more time to embrace my inner bookworm. With that being said, here are my top five favorite authors that write a whole lot about young adult love.

1. Sarah Dessen

I think it is almost a rite of passage to read at least one of Sarah Dessen’s books if you are female. I have to admit that Dessen typically uses the same formula for the majority of her novels, but I never get tired of it. A young female with some kind of conflict in her life moves through life, typically finding a cute guy in the process and having everything work out for the better in the end. It is also important to mention that Dessen has a new book coming out in early June, titled “Once and for All.”

2. Morgan Matson

I only found out about Morgan Matson last year, but I have been obsessed with her novels since. She reminds me a lot of Sarah Dessen, as they both follow a similar formulas when developing the plot for their novels. Matson’s biggest downfall is that she only releases a novel every two years, but I would recommend reading the four novels she already has out; my favorite was “Since You’ve Been Gone.”

3. Colleen Hoover

I have to admit that Colleen Hoover is probably my favorite author, and I desperately wait for her to release a new novel every year, if not multiple in one year. Every novel she has published has been different, with no two romances being the same. She always includes plot twists that keep everything interesting, and keep readers coming back for more. Unfortunately she will not be publishing a new novel until October, but I would suggest checking it out when it comes out and any of her other books! Her new novel is titled “Without Merit.”

4. Amy Harmon

Much like Matson, I only discovered Amy Harmon about a year ago. Her novels are enriched with information on varying topics, while still keeping the story very interesting with romantic elements. I have to admit that I dislike reading in the third person point-of-view, which one of her novels is written in, but I still absolutely loved the novel; the novel is called “Making Faces.” I still have a few novels of hers that I need to read, like her latest release, “From Sand and Ash,” but I swear she’s an absolutely amazing author.

5. Katie McGarry

I discovered Katie McGarry when I was in high school, and I fell in love with her writing; however, I eventually stopped reading the books she was publishing. Hear me out, her first three books in her “Pushing the Limits” series are great, and I would highly suggest reading them if you like romance that is a little more mature in nature. My favorite novel of hers would definitely be “Dare You To,” but I would suggest reading the novels in order. Although I do not follow McGarry’s new published works, I still have a special place for some of her novels, and I would still recommend reading one of her works.
