Six Ingredients To Look For In Your Skincare

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

With the recent rise in attention to skincare, nowadays it seems like everyone has some sort of ‘hail Mary’ solution when it comes to skin problems: avocado for dry skin, cucumber for tired skin, even crazy things like snail mucus to tighten your pores!

With all the different ingredients out there in skin products, I wanted to investigate what we really should and shouldn’t be putting on our faces. Here is a list of the top six ingredients you should look for in your skincare!

1. Salicylic Acid

This is probably an ingredient you’ve heard of before, also known as beta hydroxy acid, salicylic acid is known for its exfoliant properties. It is great for the gentle removal of dead skin to leave you glowing like a goddess. Salicylic acid is also good for acne treatment, it works to exfoliate within the pores as well on the outside.

2. Caffeine

Just as a cup of coffee wakes you up in the morning, caffeine in your skincare does the same thing! It works to stimulate your skin and make you appear less tired. Look for caffeine as an ingredient in your eye creams in particular! Caffeine also works to calm inflammation and irritation.

3. Coconut Oil

No, I am not talking about using raw coconut oil in your skincare routine (though some people swear by this)! I am talking about the oil as an ingredient in your products. As an ingredient, coconut oil is great for helping your skin create a moisture barrier, meaning it helps to lock moisturizing products in! Look for coconut oil in your moisturizers and face washes.

4. Cucumber

Everyone knows the beauty myth of putting cucumber slices over your eyes to remove eye bags, but actual cucumber extract is fabulous for the skin! Cucumber is high in vitamin C, an ingredient known to help rejuvenate tired skin and while also hydrating. Look for cucumber in your face.

5. Rose

Not only does this ingredient make your skin products smell amazing, it also is amazing for your skin! Rose not only works as an anti-redness agent, it also calms the skin. Rose is especially good for acne-prone skin, as it carries antibacterial properties that work to reduce acne and prevent scarring.

6. Green Tea

So get this, green tea actually can work as a cancer-fighting ingredient for your skin! It helps promote the renewal of DNA and works to protect you against UV rays. Because of this it also is great at slowing the signs of aging! Look for this ingredient in your night creams, or serums.
