Her Campus Cincinnati: What organizations are you involved with on campus?

Ashley Nkadi: Well, I am a Cincinnatus Presidential Scholar. On campus I am heavily involved with the United Black Student Association, where I serve as Information Chair. I also am the founder, editor-in-chief, and chief designer for Noir Magazine, which is put out through UBSA. I serve as the PR Chair for both the Asian American Association (co-chair) and the Caribbean Student Association (Cariba). I am a Habari Gani Ambassador for the AACRC as well. As you can see, I am very in touch with diversity and inclusion. I also have amell

HCUC: What is Noir & what made you want to become the Editor-in-Chief?

AN: Noir is UC’s premier ethnic magazine. It highlights ethic communities, organizations, and individuals on the University of Cincinnati campus. However, Noir is completely inclusive! Our staff is actually comprised mostly of Asian-Americans and Caucasians! I am the editor-in-chief because I actually founded the magazine. The first issue was written and designed entirely by me. The Noir team has grown tremendously and now we have quite a few writers and designers, however, I still design the majority of the magazine, piece it together at the end, edit the work of others, and then publish and put it out!

HCUC: What has been your favorite part about Noir so far?

AN: I love Noir because it’s unlike any other magazine. We touch on issues no other media outlets do! We discuss issues that the News Record, Cincinnati Newspapers, and popular magazines do not really discuss. I love the fact that anyone can flip through Noir and find someone that looks like his or herself. I am a lover of fashion, but honey, flip through a fashion magazine and you will see very little diversity. Noir embraces all identities and cultures! You can find an article you identify with, but flip to the next page and learn about someone else’s culture!

HCUC: What are your proudest moments here at UC?

AN: Definitely Kuamka 2015. This year I ran for Ms. Kuamka. I didn’t win but I was so proud of my performance. For my talent I even painted on stage! It was also a super proud moment for me because I was tapped…twice! At the talent portion of Kuamka I was tapped into Omicron Delta Kappa | Alpha Theta Circle, a leadership honorary. Then, at the Kuamka ball I was tapped into the Lambda Society! It was the best week!

HCUC: Who would rather have as your best friend: Beyoncé or Rihanna?

AN: Rihanna. Bad girls have more fun.
