Nichole Alvey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chatham chapter.

Name: Nichole Alvey

Year: First Year

Major: Photography

How did you choose your major?
I have always been interested in taking photos. Growing up in a small town with a ton of photo ops available has made it become almost second nature.

What are your other interests?
I used to play a lot of sports in middle school and high school, but after a really bad snowmobiling accident, I was no longer allowed to play competitively. I still participate in snowmobiling, horseback riding, and running, although not in competition. I also enjoy reading, shopping, photography, going to concerts and traveling.

Relationship Status: In a four-year, long-distance relationship

Hometown and Your Favorite Thing About It: My hometown is Middlebury, CT. One thing I have always loved about my town is the proximity to the mountains, beach, and city while it still has the small-town feeling.

Favorite TV Show: The Big Bang Theory

Favorite Movie: Grease

Favorite Musician/Band: Lady Antebellum

Why did you choose Chatham? I chose Chatham based on the photography program, scholarships, and the new surroundings.

What is your favorite place on Chatham’s campus and why? My favorite place on Chatham’s campus is the steps outside the ADC. When I am there, I am easily inspired while overlooking the tops of all the buildings straight to the Cathedral of Learning. While there, I am usually left alone to ponder and think.

What’s your dream job?
My dream job is a tie between being a National Geographic photojournalist and owning my own photography studio.

What’s your perfect Friday night?
My perfect Friday night would be to go down to Oakland to have dinner, dance with my girls, and just have fun.

What’s your favorite thing about winter?
My favorite thing about winter is the snow. I love it because it is peaceful, lovely, perfect for photos, and I get to go snowmobiling up in the Adirondacks.

What was the coolest thing you did over winter break?
Over break, the coolest thing I did was get to meet a photographer in my town that I have been inspired by for years and was allowed to go on a few shoots with her.

If you could go anywhere in the universe for free, where would you go?
If I was allowed to go anywhere in the universe for free, I would travel to Sicily and visit my family who still lives there.

Who do you look up to?
I look up to both of my parents. They overcame hardships, family disapprovals, obstacles no one would have suspected to have to endure, and still managed to stay together for almost 19 years, all the while acting like newlyweds the whole time.

When you need a jolt of inspiration, how do you get it?
When I need a jolt of inspiration, I log onto ImgFave.com and search through their photos. While there, I can see quotes, photos, and drawings that inspire me to do something with my life.

What makes you smile?
I smile about a lot of things, friends, family, jokes, people being silly or ridiculous, being in love, just making someone happy; almost as if seeing someone else smile is contagious.
