The Perks of Going to College Close to Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

Often times when people go off to college, they dream of going to a school far away from home. Students assume that by moving a great distance, they’ll be able to start a whole new life in a different city. In reality, however, going to a school near home can have many, many benefits to it.

1. You’re familiar with the area

Regardless of how far you are from home, freshman year is a huge transition.  By being familiar with the area, things won’t come as too much of a shock for you. Plus, you know all the good food places around town and your wardrobe is prepared for any season.

2. Homesickness is real

Whether it hits you at the beginning or the end of the school year, you will eventually become homesick. Luckily, if you’re ever missing home and wishing to return, it’s only a short drive away, and you can go back whenever you want.

3. You get to see your family whenever you want

Moving away from your family can be a really big challenge. When you move away, you truly do not know what you have until it’s gone. When you go to a school close to home, you can visit your family easily and goodbyes don’t have to be for a long time.

4. You can sleep in your bed back at home

No matter how much you’ve adjusted to your dorm room and small bed, nothing compares to your room back home. If you’re starting to miss the comfort you once had, its no biggie at all because you can easily return to your own place.

5. You can still keep in touch with friends back home

Even though meeting new friends in college is exciting, your old ones don’t disappear. Being close to home makes it much easier to stay in contact with people still living there. Even if you don’t see them that often, it’s still nice to be able to have the option to hang out with them when you can. In addition, your friends can easily visit you without it being complicated.
