5 Ways to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

Approximately 1 in every 8 women in the U.S. will develop some form of an invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. We have come a long way in research to help treat early onset breast cancer, but to this day a little more than 40,000 people die of breast cancer each year. You don’t need to be a doctor or cancer researcher to help find a cure for late-detected breast cancer. Here are some easy ways you can support breast cancer awareness:

1. Take part in a breast cancer marathon

While many of these happen in October, there are several that happen throughout the year. All the money raised go toward breast cancer research, so search one on Google and sign up!

2. Buy products that support the cause

There are a ton of products you can buy that all or some of the proceeds go toward breast cancer awareness and research. Some of these include Lokai, Under Armour, EOS, Bumble and Bumble and a lot more. Find a product you like and get shopping!

3. Volunteer

Some of us may not be able to donate or shop, so the next best thing would be to volunteer. There are a lot of organizations, such as Susan G. Komen, that will allow you to volunteer at various events and fundraisers throughout the year.

4. Get educated

A lot of the time, breast cancer detected in its early stages are very treatable. It’s important to be as educated about the disease as possible and to make sure you take preventative measures to stay healthy.

5. Spread the word

In today’s world of social media and sharing mostly everything with everyone, it’s super easy to spread the word about breast cancer awareness. You can share an article, post a hashtag or even just remind friends and family to get regular mammograms, especially if they are at a high risk (such as if breast cancer runs in the family, if they are older than 50, etc.).
