Why College Women Should Say YES To Reading Shonda Rhimes’ “Year of Yes”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Do you love Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder or Private Practice? More than likely you LOVE one of these shows and have fangirled hard over the season finale cliff-hangers and the dynamic love triangles. If you always thought Shonda Rhimes, the creator behind your favorite shows, would be the perfect BFF, now you know it’s true. Shonda recently released her book Year of Yes in which she dishes out amazing advice and shares how saying yes for one year changed her life.

Despite being extremely successful and an overall female icon, Shonda explains she was unhappy because she didn’t say yes to experiencing life. It is hard to imagine that someone with such a prosperous career could be unhappy. This is why I love Year of Yes. Shonda gets real and shares her struggles and triumphs and how difficult and terrifying it was for her to say yes. She does not sugar-coat it or make it sound easy but she shows how important it is to go outside your comfort zone no matter who you are. Never stop saying yes and trying new things.

As a college senior it is terrifying to think that the comfort and security of college will be coming to an end. However, by reading Shonda’s Year of Yes I know that no one ever is 100% confident trying something new. It is so important now more than ever to say YES to things that make you uncomfortable. You only have one chance to be in college and find out who you are and what you want to be. Therefore, say YES to things you are unsure of and learn what makes you, you.

If you are looking for a great book to read in between finals study breaks be sure to check out Year of Yes. If you love any of Shonda Rhimes shows you will love this book. It also makes a great gift for anyone who needs a little encouragement in order to say yes to living a more fulfilled life in 2016.

My name is Lauren, I am a recent transfer student to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I previously attended George Mason University, where I was a member of PRSSA, Gamma Phi Beta International sorority, and Golden Key International Honour Society. I grew up in North Carolina, but spent a year in-between my freshman and sophomore year of college living in Bratislava, Slovakia with my family. During my time abroad I had an internship with The Slovak Atlantic Commission and was able to work in a multi-cultural work environment. I also traveled throughout Europe while I was living in Slovakia, some of my favorite places I visited are London, Cannes, Zurich, Budapest, and Krakow. My goal is to one-day work as an entertainment publicist, I attended the 66th Festival de Cannes with my Cannes Cinephiles Accreditation. While at Cannes I met many industry leaders and knew this was the career for me. I am also a student member of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. I look forward to the new adventures that await me as a transfer student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
