I am sure by now you have at least heard of “Among Us.” Even if you do not play it, you are likely to know someone who does, or you’ve likely seen posts on social media about it. AOC even Twitch streamed herself playing the game with Ilhan Omar, drawing over 400,000 viewers.

Since the game became popular, I have been completely obsessed. I was hesitant to play it at first because I did not understand how, but once I got the hang of it I was hooked. I even joined discord to be in an “Among Us” server with some of my friends. I am one of the few girls in the server surrounded by many gamer guys. I have so much fun playing with them and talking every night. It serves somewhat as a replacement for socializing since school is completely remote right now. I am, however, the very worst at being the imposter because I am really bad at lying to people. They ask, “Emily, are you the imposter?” I typically just either just laugh or say “I have no comment.”

Okay, I guess now I will get into the good stuff. The injury. I’ll start with the rules of play before I tell you how I got hurt. My housemates and I made a non-virtual version of the game. We dress in all black and turn off all of the lights in the house, including the glow from my Amazon Alexa. We draw cards, and if you draw the joker, you are the imposter. After an eerie and loud count to 10, the imposter can start ‘killing’ crewmates (touching them on the shoulder).

We were playing this real-life version of the beloved game, and I will admit, I was really getting geeked over who the imposter could have been that round. I was running full speed away from an ambiguous blob of a person in the dark when I slammed my foot into a dresser. It hurt so badly, but I obviously had to keep playing! I did not want to get murked by the imposter!

I honestly just thought that I stubbed my toe. I knew, however, when I woke up and could barely make the walk to the kitchen to get a glass of water, that something was wrong. I went to urgent care and they told me I had deep bone bruising, and I had to be on crutches for a week. Sucks, but it was doable. One problem, my foot was still killing me after they said I should feel better and I could not move my toes. I went to UNC Orthopedics, and they said, “Oh honey, this is a no-joke fracture in your fourth toe. You have to be on crutches for six weeks, and it’ll still feel broken for probably nine months.”

All of this for a game of real-life “Among Us” in the dark. I am being dramatic when I say I broke my foot since I only broke one toe, but it hurts really bad. I’m also salty about being on crutches during most of the break. Well, at least I can still play the video game version. Be careful out there, and don’t hurt yourself and end up with crutches. They are NOT fun.
