Fall is finally here and the Chapel Hill area is hosting some great music events. After many hours debating and contemplating, I was finally able to narrow down to five awesome events taking place in October. Mark you calendars and get ready to rock out at these local events!
1. The Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance
Thursday, October 6th to Sunday, October 9th
Music, food and camping–what could be more fun? Enjoy the crisp October air and a cup of apple cider while enjoying over 60 bands over four days on four different stages. Shakori Hills is near Silk Hope, just 20 minutes southwest of Chapel Hill, NC. Ticket prices vary from $90 4-day passes to $20 – $40 single day tickets. While the prices may be a bit steep, these bluegrass, folk acts are well worth it. Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Toubab Krewe and Bearfoot are only a few. Be sure to check out local student act Mipso Trio on Thursday or Saturday. Members Jacob Sharp, Joseph Terrell and Wood Robinson are sure to rock the house with their intricate blend of soul, bluegrass and rock’ n’ roll.
2. Deer Tick at Cat’s Cradle
Monday, October 17th
Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show begins at 9 p.m. Deer Tick is an earth-shattering indie folk band from Providence, Rhode Island. Led by guitarist and singer-songwriter, John McCauley, the band is sure to but on an engaging show. With electrifying guitar riffs and soulful lyrics, imagine The Avett Brothers meets B.B. King. Check out their song, “Baltimore Blues No. 1,” if you are unfamiliar with them.
3. The Rosebuds at Cat’s Cradle
Wednesday, October 19th
From local indie label Merge Records, The Rosebuds is a duo act that is sure to satisfy your indie rock needs. From Raleigh, NC, members Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp released their fifth full-length record, “Loud Planes Fly Low,” this past June. With amazing songs like “Woods” and “Come Visit Me,” The Rosebuds have been more than buzzworthy. This summer they were even on tour with the amazing Bon Iver. Buy tickets here!
4. The Civil Wars at Page Auditorium
Thursday, October 20th
The Civil Wars is an indie folk duo composed of Joy Williams and John Paul White from Nashville, Tennessee. Their music is full of chilling melodies and powerful lyrics. Their hit single, “Poison and Wine,” appeared on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in 2009. Their sensational album, “Barton Hollow,” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Digital Albums Chart. Be sure to check them out for an intimate performance full of stripped acoustics and soothing vocals.
5. Wild Flag at Cat’s Cradle
Friday, October 21
With a debut album just released on September 13th, Wild Flag is taking the indie punk rock scene by storm. The Portland, Oregon and Washington, D.C.-based quartet consists of Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timony and Janet Weiss. They have been associated with the following great acts: Bright Eyes, Quasi and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. Wild Flag’s stage presence and energy pumps up the crowd for an enthralling show. They have received fantastic reviews from music powerhouses Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine. Check out Spin’s review here!
