Celebrating Diversity: Hispanic Heritage Month Festivities at Lenoir

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

The Carolina Hispanic Association (CHispA) and the Carolina Latina/0 Collaborative (CLC) worked together with Carolina Dining Services to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month which runs from September 15 to October 15. On Thursday, October 6, Top of Lenoir served traditional Hispanic cuisine with foods like tortillas, carnitas, bori bori and paella valencia. There was also salsa music and traditional Hispanic decorations. The TV screens in Lenoir which typically display nutritional information, instead played slides of famous Hispanic and Hispanic American icons including Sonia Sotomayor, America Ferrera, Carmen Miranda, and Joseph Marion Hernández.

Maracas decorated the dining hall to add some Hispanic flavor.

First year students, Taylor Draper, a vocal performance major, and Kayla Melton, a biology major, enjoy their traditional Hispanic meal at Top of Lenoir.

Marisol Rangel, a senior sociology major and president of CHispA, sits at a table with Darius Whitney, a first-year political science major and member of CLC, to hand out informational fliers to interested students.

Carolina Dining Services offered a plethora of traditional Hispanic dishes, including this gargantuan bowl of paella valencia that consists of rice, vegetables, and chicken or beef.
