2012 UNC Dance Marathon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Whether you love them or you hate them, you know who they are. They are the people who are screaming at the top of their lungs at you on your way to class on the quad. Who are they? They are UNC Dance Marathon.

Since the first annual UNC Dance Marathon in 1999, UNC Dance Marathon has raised close to three million dollars under the mission that states “to unite the University, community and state in fostering emotional and financial support that improves the quality of life for the patients and families of N.C. Children’s Hospital.”

Last year emotions were high and so was the amount of money raised: more than $436,000. The organization had 1,600 students dancers and 500 extra volunteers called “moralers” who work for one of the four six-hour shifts to encourage the dancers.

Aimee Rider, a 2010 participant, said that emotions during the 24 hours cannot be replicated by any other event at UNC.

“I have certainly gained a better understanding of how much of an impact one person can make on situations that can result in a life saved or lost.”

Rider and hundreds of her fellow classmates have already started raising the minimum amount of $150 pledged to dance.

If you are interested, you can still participate in the cause by donating to a dancer or coming to visit the event. You can check in at the visitors’ table at the front of Fetzer Gym to visit the 2012 dancers and moralers between 7:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 17-18!
