Campus Celebrity: Canterbury Cathedral

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CCCU chapter.

Situated in the heart of Canterbury, lies one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England, a World Heritage Site: ‘Canterbury Cathedral’. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Founded, in 597 by Augustine of Canterbury. Who was sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 596 as a missionary to the Anglo-Saxons. Augustine founded the cathedral in 597 and dedicated it to Jesus Christ, the Holy Saviour.

The cathedral is home to a serene atmosphere within the historical walls, it can be seen to be either a place of worship or a place to reflect or to embrace the surroundings. the historical element and the beautiful nature of the cathedral allows it to be a tourist hotspot, allowing one to be engaged with all the culture and history that is involved by engaging with the Historical artefacts. The cathedral is furnished with beautiful Stained Glass Windows and various displays that narrate the stories of events in history that have helped shape the cathedral.

It is also a good place for students who are members of the Anglican Church to continue to increase their faith and get closer to God whilst they study at university. It is also good for any other faith holders to find that same inner peace. However, religious or not peace can still be found because of the atmosphere.

Services are held throughout the day and this could be ideal for anyone who may be busy on a Sunday morning but don’t want to lose said faith/belief. They also hold services in French.

Not only is it a place of worship/serenity. It also hosts the graduation ceremonies of Canterbury Christ Church University and neighbouring us is the University of Kent.

Whitney is a second year drama student at Canterbury Christ Church University. She enjoys writing and hopes to become a teacher.
