Unattainable Woman: A PSA to All Women!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

In today’s society, being a woman is so hard—besides the obvious things like childbirth and our monthly visitor, Mother Nature, of course.

As women, we are constantly under scrutiny, limited by double standards, pressured by societal beauty standards and, overall, fighting to be heard and taken seriously in “a man’s world.”

With that being said, I ran across a link for a video by beauty YouTuber Jordan Hanz and have thought about it literally everyday since I saw it.  She took to her YouTube platform to combat a lot of what the world has to say about women in her video “Unattainable Woman.” Amber Rose and Blac Chyna’s outfits at this year’s VMAs inspired her to make the video. Remember how they literally wore all of the nasty, shady, disrespectful comments on their backs and definitely made quite the statement? Well, this was Jordan’s take on their outfits, and she most certainly made a powerful statement as well. She spoke about how women are labeled as bitches if she is confident and has her own voice, weak if she shows emotion or is vulnerable, lazy if she is plus-sized, an attention-seeker if she wears makeup (to appeal to men), ugly if she is strong and muscular, sluts if she embraces her sexuality or prude if she hasn’t had sex and much more. Bottom line: we, as women, are constantly being put into a box, unable and unknowing of how to express ourselves in a way that is acceptable. With over several billion women in the world, who’s to say what is or isn’t an appropriate way for a woman to act? Of course, there are rules concerning etiquette and such, but what works for one woman is different for the next. What gives anyone the right to judge or criticize a women’s unique situation, whether on the basis of her self-esteem or as extreme as sexual assault? It time for us to stand up and be unapologetic about being women. Be unapologetically true to yourself and what makes you happy!

So what’s the takeaway from Jordan’s video? Take everything that people say about you and own it. Own your truths. No one knows your life but you. Everything that has happened to you or has been said about you was done or said for a reason. It all makes you…you! Turn your negatives into positives, and let the world know that you aren’t going to hide behind someone else’s perception of you! Learn to love the beautiful women that God took his time on and created; he makes no mistakes.

Be unapologetic. Be a woman, whatever that means to you. Be so unbothered with what the world has to say that people can’t help but to admire your energy and aura. Just be YOU

I don’t know about you, but I’m proud to be a woman!
