Tattoos at Work: Do We Still Have to Hide an Inked Body?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Do you think the world is still conservative? Her Campus talked to some Casperians about tattoos and their repercussion at work. But in opposite of what many people think, having the body drawn is no longer an obstacle to getting a job, thought prejudices and judgments still exist.

This less conservative view on tattoos happens because we are talking about communication area. It’s way different than engineering, law or any other area that has more traditional work offices. The girls that reported their experiences are journalism students, and they have a positive view about tattoos and the job market.

“I’ve never had problems caused by my tattoos, but that’s because of the places I have worked. Even in one of my interviews, they asked about my tattoos, but to know a little more about me. They asked what motivated me to do them, what they meant, if I wanted to do more … otherwise, in my currently work they never mentioned anything about it and I also never felt necessity to hide them for an interview”, said Julia de Camillo.

Although there is still a lot of conservatism in the professional world, none of the girls we talked had any problems during job interviews because of their tattoos. However, journalism student Maria Victoria Poli says she would like to get a big tattoo on her arm, but she hasn’t done yet because her dream job still has an image criteria. “I’ve never made a point of hiding my tattoos, I think it’s wrong for people to judge, but I know the prejudice still exists. That’s why I must be careful if I want to be a television reporter. I deprive myself of doing something that I would like very much because of my profession”, she reports.

Ana Lua Mendonça reveals that she made her tattoos after she started working at her current company and she still did not suffer any problems, and that even many employees there have tattoos. “I work in a more conservative company where everyone uses social clothes and I’ve never had a problem. Even the secretary has several large tattoos, too”, she says.

“It’s happened to someone from my old job asking me to take off my piercings and wear a cardigan at an event we had. Then I explained that I could wear the jacket, but couldn’t take the piercings off. My boss said that piercing is not very professional, and criticized, but I didn’t care and went to the event in the same way”, Isabel Kassab explains.

Casperians did not go through big problems, and if they faced some difficulties, they came out well of the situation. Although, we can see that there is still room for conservatism, in this “open-minded” world today.
