Screenwriter boy: Meet Thiago Nolla

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

A pattern that is possible to be noticed in any college freshmen is the excitement of doing everything at once – call it making huge plans for some, partying for others. Even before beginning classes, Thiago Nolla was already a multifaceted writer. Lover of cinema and theater and every step of the backstage production, he is known for acting, being part of a radio show and writing his own screen plays.

Name: Thiago Nolla

Year: 2018

Major: Radio, TV & Internet

Hometown: São Paulo

Sign: Pisces

Status: Taken

Interests: Acting, writing, watching movies and series

When did you begin writing?I became interested in writing when I was nine years-old. I had just found out that my dad wrote a book – it was a school’s book, but a book nonetheless. Then I created some twenty-page stories that I would give my brother to read – he, of course, loved them, so that made me feel I was making the best books in the world. Later, I started reading some classics and wanted to copy their style, so I decided to do it, and it’s been nine years since then. My interest for scripts in general began when I was in an exchange program in the United States, where I met many people that intended to study cinema. They invited me to help them in some school projects and when I came back, I was sure that’s what I wanted to do.

That’s when you started acting as well? Not exactly. I started acting when I was six years-old, because I was a quite shy kid. I lived in another city by then and it was basically those small plays in school, you know? Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty… Then I started acting in many plays and do it until now, in Cásper theatrical group Grapetes.

What about your interest in radio? Some people that already were in a radio program actually called me one day just to see how it was, and the program was focused on cinema! It’s called Super-8 and they literally told me to do quick remarks whenever it was possible, so here I am! I always thought I would never even get close to the radio, but I ended up liking it a lot.

Which artists are your main inspiration? On movies, I like the work of director Lars Von Trier a lot. I saw Dogville and my immediate reaction was “I need to see EVERY movie he did!” Then there’s Fritz Lang, (from the classic Metropolis) whose flicks genre are always more between mystery and terror. From Brazil, I would say Glauber Rocha, a 60’s director. About literature, I love Jorge Amado, José Saramago, even though he writes in a complicated way, Rafael Draccon, who is a young fantastic fiction Brazilian writer, J. K. Rowling and Charles Baudelaire. Oh, I have a certain passion for Meryl Streep.

What’s your Hogwarts house?Ravenclaw! Last year, I went to Orlando and it was so fantastic! I had to buy the journal with Ravenclaw’s emblem on the cover. My girlfriend recorded me while we were visiting the theme park and she told me I was acting like I kid – but it’s impossible not to!

Brenda is just a (not so) small town girl still adjusting her temper to living in the hustle and bustle of São Paulo. Majoring in journalism, she is passionate about sharing experiences and listening to new stories - especially when they seem to be made for a movie. She spends her spare time reading comic books, listening to 00's music and collecting great profiles and articles published online. Not so secretly, she nurtures a special relationship with her still in progress, self-made Kardashian clan bio.
