7 Female Friendships from TV Shows that Will Update Your Definition of Goals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Life is a rollercoaster. It’s filled with ups and downs, sudden turns, unexpected twists… We never know what’s coming ahead of us, and having friends to ride it with you is better than doing it by yourself.

Here are 7 friendships from TV shows that will definitely make you update your definition of “friendship goals”.

#1 Monica, Phoebe and Rachel (Friends)

Let’s take it back to the first episode ever of Friends. In “The one where Monica gets a roommate”, the show starts with Rachel walking into the Central Perk on a wedding dress. She’d just left a guy at the altar, and had no place to live. As she reunites with her high school friend – even though they haven’t seen each other for years –, Monica is sweet enough to let Rachel live with her, since Phoebe had just moved out. That was just the start of an epic journey. If you stop and analyze each of the girls’ personalities and hobbies, you’ll see that there are more differences than similarities, and that’s what makes the trio such a good role model of a true friendship. They’ve been there for each other no matter how strange, tough, or embarrassing the situation was – they’d always do anything in their power to help and protect one another.

#2 Elena, Bonnie and Caroline (The Vampire Diaries)

When you first watch the show, it’s very unlikely to imagine this trio being the best of friends. In the beginning, Caroline isn’t that close to Elena and Bonnie as they were by the end of the show, and that’s what makes them one of the most epic group of friends: they’ve grown closer to each other as time went by and danger grew in the mysterious town of Mystic Falls. TVD ended perfectly at its 8th season, and it was a ride filled with danger, losses, manipulations, and sacrifices – but that never stopped the three main female characters to lose their love for one another: it only grew stronger.

#3 Lydia and Allison (Teen Wolf)

In the first episode ever of Teen Wolf, Allison is the new girl in town, and Lydia is the popular one, who dates the captain of the school’s lacrosse team. In every single TV show/movie that follows a cliché, they’d be the typical “enemies”, trying to tear each other down in every possibility. However, these two were the opposite of enemies: they became best friends in a short amount of time despite all their differences – and would stop the world to save one another. Their character development throughout the show is undeniable, and there’s no doubt that big part of that is due to the start of their friendship.

#4 Blair and Serena (Gossip Girl)

These two have been through thick and thin throughout 6 whole seasons – and there’s so much to talk about that it would take a whole day to list all the ups and downs of Blair and Serena’s friendship. They’ve been like sisters since forever and that’s why they always find a way to forgive each other despite all the sabotages and schemes to get back at one another – and there’s been a lot. The fact that no matter how mad at each other they are, if one of them is in trouble, every difference seems to be forgotten, is what makes their love for each other always come first than any fight they’ll ever have.

#5 Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily (Pretty Little Liars)

These are four completely different girls who were basically forced to come together to solve the ultimate mystery of their lives: who’s behind the text messages that threaten their friends, families and themselves. The person that signs these blackmails by “A” is almost like a ghost, haunting the girls with their biggest secrets. The stakes are high and they know that everything could go wrong if they don’t unite their strengths, which is what they do. That’s why their friendship is so natural: they didn’t ask for this, but once they’re all targets, they grow closer and develop a love for one another that goes beyond just finding out who “A” is. These people have tried to put the girls against each other uncountable times, and have failed in each one of them – at every single try, the bond was only strengthened, and that kept on happening until the very end.

#6 Jessica and Trish (Jessica Jones)

This friendship is the definition of “unpredictable”. While Trish is a wealthy radio show host, Jessica is a tough woman – the one you won’t want to mess with –, who suffers from PTSD after being mind-controlled by the villain of the season, Kilgrave. When she thinks she’s finally free from him, he goes after someone else, making Jessica want to end him once and for all. To do that, she asks Trish for help even though they weren’t in the best place of their relationship. They both have a lot of history together, so Trish doesn’t hesitate on helping her best friend the same way Jessica did in the past, to help the radio host escape from an abusive mother and get through her drug problem. Their relationship was, without any doubts, one of the highlights of its first, and so far, only season. It grew from estrangement to affection, and people were so amazed that the producers confirmed that next season will focus on their friendship. The best thing about them is that, no matter how difficult Jessica makes it to be helped and how dangerous the situation is, Trish is always there for her, and vice-versa.

#7 Robin and Lily (How I Met Your Mother)

The two of them are completely different from one another. Lily is a romantic, but impulsive woman, while Robin is realistic and rational. Those differences coming together should result in absolute chaos, but that’s the exact reason why both work so great together: they complete each other. While Lily has found her true love, Marshall, in college, Robin struggles on getting serious with guys because she doesn’t want to get married – ever. That has always been her biggest difficulty and Lily has always been there for her. On the other hand, while Robin is sure about what she wants, Lily struggles on making tough decisions and Robin is always there to help her make them. They only want the best for one another, and no matter how bad the situation is, they’ll always know one thing for sure: they have each other.
