The holidays are a very exciting time! Trees go up, lights are hung, Starbucks comes out with their iconic holiday cups and much, much more. Additionally, the holidays are a great distraction from the project, papers and pressure piling up on college students before finals. The holidays can also be a time of greed and selfishness, however. Wishlists give us an outlet to put everything we want down on paper, and sometimes we can get caught up about wanting what we don’t have, while there are others who find the holidays a hard time because they don’t have much. Here are some ways to beat that holiday greed!

1. Close the laptop

Computers are a wonderful thing, aren’t they? They’re also very smart. Websites keep track of the pages people look at, then place relevant advertisements on pages like your email and social media accounts. It’s a good tactic marketers use. You find a pair of shoes you like, close the page, but later see the same pair of boots on an advertisement in your email. Seeing the product twice makes you inclined to want it more. By staying off your laptop, you’ll see fewer ads and be less inclined to buy things!

2. Watch a movie

Take some time off from worrying about your own life and watch someone else’s story! Movies are a great way to relax and spend time with friends while taking your mind off anything that could be going on in your life. There are also a lot of holiday-themed movies to choose from. Freeform hosts a 25 Days of Christmas special, so you have access to holiday movies every day!

3. Have a holiday craft-making session

What better way to have fun than crafting? Use resources like Pinterest to find cute holiday crafts and gifts to make. Being creative relieves you of stress and takes you back to those nostalgic childhood feelings.

4. Clean out your closet

With holidays around the corner and new Black Friday finds, you may need a little more space in your closet. To make room for your new clothes, take a look at your closet and see what you could live without. If you’re unsure whether or not to give an item of clothing up, give it the year test. If you haven’t worn it in a year, chances are you won’t ever wear it again! Take your clothes to a place like Goodwill, a local shelter or The Salvation Army where you can donate them.

5. Spend time with friends and family

The best way to be less greedy during the holiday season is to spend time with your loved ones; it’s what the holidays are really about! Hanging with your family and friends creates irreplaceable memories that money can’t buy.

Happy Holidays!
