Why You Should Keep Your Resolution to Get Active in 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

As we approach early February, the attendance of fitness and recreation centres on campus and in the city slowly starts to dwindle.  While committing to those resolutions of being healthy and active in 2013 can seem less than thrilling, getting physical shouldn’t be something to dread.

Yes, it’s getting colder out. Yes, waking up to a run on the treadmill instead of hot cup of coffee might not seem like the most appealing way to start your day. But sometimes all it comes down to is changing your mindset.

So, why keep making  the effort to go to the gym?

Well….

1. It’s how you maintain your health :  This one might seem obvious, but think about it – if you’re making it to the gym on a regular basis, foods high in saturated fats suddenly don’t look as appealing because you put in so much work to burn calories earlier in the day. It’s an endless circle with no results if you don’t prioritize consistency in a healthy, balanced eating routine. Throw an apple in your bag with some crackers and a whole wheat sandwich and leave the chips in the vending machine.

2.Spring is closer than you think: It may be hard to believe at this point but before we know it we’ll all be finishing our finals and making plans for the summer. And believe me, there is nothing wrong with getting a head start on bathing suit weather. It’s great motivation to get you out of bed in the morning and sticking to a routine that promises results for the many beach days to come.

3.Mental health awareness: Working out is a way to relieve stress and trade it for endorphins instead. Reaping the benefits of exercise starts with the decision to mentally agree to put in the effort. After that, it gets easier, especially once you start noticing results – it even has the potential to become something you actually start looking forward to.

As busy students , many of us take on more than one commitment during the school year in addition to a full semester of courses. Take advantage of the activities Carleton Athletics provide! Join a class in an area of fitness that you already enjoy or are looking to explore! Good luck!
