Give Back This Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

Christmas is just around the corner and the holiday break is upon us. Giving back to the community that you live in is a good way to be thankful for all of your blessings. Here are some ways that you can give back this season:

1. From natural disasters to poverty, mental disorders to disease, the world is full of those who are in need of support. There are a lot of organizations here in Ottawa that all work to provide donations for people who aren’t as fortunate as we are. Why not donate canned goods with your weekly Starbucks coffee money to those who can’t afford the luxuries of three meals a day? Drop by your local food bank and help the thousands of families in Ottawa struggling through the holidays and say “Merry Christmas” with a meal, spare change, or even volunteer.

2. Sometimes we usually do not tip a huge amount of money to people who work in customer service, but perhaps we should be a little more mindful and considerate during the holiday season. These people work overtime and extra hours during this season, and sometimes minimum wage can’t cover all finances. Tipping will definitely put those working hard in the food and customer service industry in a good mood, especially if they get stuck with the Christmas Eve shift.

3. Go to a hospital or child care centre nearby and read a story to children who are going through tough times. They will appreciate it a whole lot. It will also be worth it when you see a huge smile plastered on their face.  Old age homes and hospices are also great for spreading holiday cheer with your storytelling, as elders would definitely appreciate a good read.

4. Volunteering is a very good way to give back. The Ottawa Mission is a great place to serve meals to the homeless. You can always go downtown and buy a meal or warm clothes for those who seem in need.

5. Donate a Christmas tree to a family who is in need of one! A tree is definitely an important symbol when it comes to Christmas and all families who celebrate it would like to have one. It’s a nice gesture and they will surely be grateful.
