A Thousand and One Nights: Spring Formal 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Campbell chapter.

The Marriott in Raleigh hosted one of Campbell University’s most exciting events, the Spring Formal, on March 26, 2011. Members of Campbell University’s CAB (Campus Activities Board) planned the formal and ensured that it went off without a hitch.  These members were dedicated, and their hard work began in the Marriot that morning at 8 AM to transform the room from dull to delightful. A lot of Camels came to boogie down in this year’s fashions. The formal was lovely even though the weather was not. Despite the rain and freezing cold, it did not deter Campbell students from showing up and throwing down their moves.
Everything was delightful from the food to the decorations, all suiting the theme “One Thousand and One Nights.”  Mr. Whittenton, a talented and Godly man, made the balloon décor by hand. Not only were the decorations extraordinary, but the food was phenomenal. From mini egg rolls to cupcakes, the Campbell CAB formal committee did an excellent job of feeding their guests. However, there was one small hitch: there was not enough of the food to last all night. Other than that, the members of both CAB and Marriot were extremely generous.

Zebra and sequins seemed to be the hot trend for Campbell collegietes™ this year along with the red and turquoise dresses.  The length of most dresses this year was so short, it was as if Victoria’s Secret had sponsored the event. What’s hot? Dressing to one’s body type. What’s not hot? Having your body fall out of your dress. A variety of shoes were worn at spring formal as well. Most girls came in heels or flats, but there were a few brave “soles” in the form of Chuck Taylors, providing a unique take on formal wear. What’s hot? Shoes that were comfy enough to dance in. What’s not hot? Heels so tall that they could be used as a weapon. Hair styles were mostly worn down with curls and a bump. What’s hot? A small bump. What’s not hot? A Snookie bump.

With only three or four slow songs throughout the evening, the DJ played just the right amount to keep the audience on its feet and dancing the night away. Attendees thoroughly enjoyed a variety of dances from the Dougie to Cotton-Eye Joe. Several times throughout the night, girls would get up on stage and show off their dancing “skills.” Everyone seemed to enjoy these displays and the lack of stage fright.
Overall, the Spring Formal was a success, and long after the dance was over, many CAB members and other volunteers stayed behind to help clean up the aftermath of the night’s festivities. I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Spring Formal, and I know a lot of other Campbell students did too. Thank you to all involved with the formal! I cannot wait to see what CAB comes up with next year.
