5 Ways to Naturally Detox

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Need a new detox regimen? Avoid chemicals and choose these all-natural, simple, healthy ways to detox. You’ll feel more relaxed, and your body will thank you!

1. Drink more water

Water serves as a carrying agent for all processes in the body and helps to eliminate waste and allow sweating. Without proper hydration, the body has difficulty removing toxins from the body. According to the Institute of Medicine, women should consume about 2.7 liters of water per day and men should consume about 3.7 liters. Carry around a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated on the go, save money and reduce harm to the planet!

2. Sweat

Exercise helps detoxification by stimulating body processes and opening pores. Ever had a little too much to drink one night and smelled the alcohol in your next day’s workout? This is the body’s way of bringing toxic substances to the surface and excreting them through your skin. Try hot yoga, a run or a spin class!

3. Eat more fruits and veggies!

Eat more whole (if possible, locally grown) fruits and veggies. Not only are fresh fruits and vegetables delicious and high in vitamins and minerals, they are also loaded with fiber. Fiber serves to provide bulk in the diet and helps the digestive system cleanse itself of anything lingering in the intestines that can cause bloating, discomfort or illness within the body. Head out to Farmer’s Market (on Higuera Street) on Thursday nights for local, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

4. Lemon and ginger

Lemon serves to cleanse the kidneys and liver, which trap and filter toxins out of the blood. Ginger stimulates the digestive system, circulation, and sweating, which all help to cleanse the body of harmful little buggers! Try a hot lemon and ginger tea.

5. Take a yoga class

Yoga allows the body to twist and move in ways that help to cleanse the internal organs through massage. By moving the body through a series of poses, deep muscle tissue is also massaged and allows lactic acid build up to be released. Because yoga is a mind-body exercise, it also allows for a cleansing of the mind. The focus on breathing in yoga helps to reduce stress and turn focus internally to the deep connection between the mind and body. Positive self-affirmations during inhales and the releasing of negative energy during exhales can help reduce anxiety and promote optimism. The Cal Poly Recreation Center offers classes several times a week — just make sure to arrive early to ensure a spot!
