10 Signs That You & Your Roomie Are Practically a Married Couple

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Now that we’re well into the school year, and after living with the same person for months, it’s probably safe to say that you’ve come to know your roommate pretty well. For some of us, that’s not necessarily a good thing. I mean your roommate could have turned out to be a serial killer, who would’ve known. But for others, you may have found yourself a lifelong friend, one who is there for you in sickness and in health, for better or for worse. Let’s face it, you guys are practically a married couple…

1. You have pet names exclusively for each other.

Maybe it’s not “honey” or “sweetie” but you and your roommate definitely have nicknames for each other. And if we’re being honest, they’re probably the contact names you have for each other in your phones.

2. You often prefer a night in together rather than a night out.

Matching pajamas, warm fuzzy blankets, maybe a glass of some cheap wine and your favorite Netflix show that you always watch together sounds much better than a night of party hopping in the cold. You may even decide to have a little dance party of your own.

3. You get worried when they come home later than expected.

It’s 7:43. They said they’d be home at 7:00. OH MY GOD WHAT HAPPENED? And you end up pacing around the room waiting for the sound of the doorknob turning to save you from isolation.

4. You can do or say anything around them with absolutely no judgment.

You know, those completely random thoughts that pop in to your mind that most people would ignore if you shared them. Like, why don’t they make grape-flavored yogurt? A very serious question that you and your roommate dedicate time to answering.

5. You leave little notes/gifts for each other.

Sometimes you’ll find a post-it note on your desk telling you to have a great day or a small gift on your bed from your dear roomie who loves you so. You also get really excited (we’re talking fangirling status) when you see something in a store that they might like.

6. Out of all the texts you send daily, 70% go to them.

Probably consisting of “where are you?” questions and random nonsense only you two can understand. Not to mention they’re most likely your number one friend on Snapchat, in a large majority of your Instagram pictures, and Facebook probably recognizes their face when you post a picture of you two.

7. You have another pair of roommates that you go out with.

The roommate equivalent of a double date. You may find that you refer to yourself as “we” instead of “I” when talking, and chances are you can even guess your roommate’s order at the restaurant.

8. You’ve talked about getting a pet before like it’s a child.

You’re just not sure if you guys are ready for this type of commitment yet. With school and a job to worry about, would you even have time to take care of it? A fish can’t be that much work though…

9. You know each other too well.

From her favorite color to the name of her third grade teacher, you practically know every detail about your roommate’s life, and she knows yours. “Did I ever tell you about – Yes,” “Well, the other day – I know.” This kind of conversation happens frequently between you two.

10. You have no idea what you’d do without them.

They keep you up until 2:00am laughing and are always there when you need a shoulder to cry on. When people ask you whether or not you like your roommate, your answer is always unmistakably, “I do.”
