For as long as I can remember, Valentine’s Day has been my favorite holiday. February 14 was always a big deal in my house growing up. Every year, I would watch my dad bring my mom a dozen beautiful red roses along with flowers and cards for my sister and me.
My parents taught me what it means to love, be loved and to show love. Maybe it’s the hopeless romantic speaking in me, but what’s not to love about Valentine’s Day? Here are 14 reasons why Valentine’s is not so bad for all you cynics out there.
1. Heart-shaped pizza
Come on, who doesn’t love a good pizza? The cheesy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness is the perfect snack for a stay-at-home date or to indulge in on your own. You do you honey!
2. Whether you spend Valentine’s Day with your significant other
3. With your girlfriends (HOLLA FOR GALENTINE’S DAY!)
4. Or your dog….
5. It’s a day entirely dedicated to love
You don’t need an excuse to tell people that you love them, but it’s a great opportunity to show them that you do.
6. There’s chocolate everywhere
Whether you’re into Russell Stover, heart-shaped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or chocolate-covered strawberries, this is the holiday for those who are obsessed with sugar.
7. Presents
Whether you’re the one getting spoiled or you decide to buy gifts for someone else, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for some guilt-free shopping, even if you’re buying presents for yourself.
8. Sappy romantic movies
If you’re telling me you haven’t cried while watching “The Notebook,” you’re lying.
9. It’s the only time of year you receive those corny Valentine’s Day Cards in your Twitter DM’s.
You know exactly what I’m talking about. If you don’t laugh out loud at these you have no humor.
10. It’s all about the color pink
Two Words: “Mean Girls.”
11. It’s the perfect time to get crafty
Whether you think you’re creative or not, Pinterest will make you want to whip out the glitter.
12. Date night
Guys, if you’re reading this, take her to eat spaghetti. Works every time.
13. Flowers everywhere
Whether you’re into classic roses, sweet daisies or sassy sunflowers, beautiful bouquets are the perfect way to brighten anyone’s day.
14. Contrary to popular belief, Valentine’s Day is actually a real holiday
In Rome during the third century, Emperor Claudius II banned marriage. However, St. Valentine broke the rules and married couples in secret *sigh, how romantic!* Unfortunately, when the emperor found out, things did not end well for Valentine. So let’s not make his efforts go to waste, okay people?
Love can be a tricky thing. It’s not always flowers and chocolates, but on February 14 it is! Even if Valentine’s Day isn’t your favorite and you don’t believe in the power of a Hallmark card, make sure to tell the people around you that you love them. After all, love is all you need.
