Valentines Day for Long Distance Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and for couples who are in long-distance relationships it’s usually a dreaded day rather than a day for celebration. Being in a long distance relationship of my own I like to think of the holiday as a time to reflect on the love shared with my boyfriend over time rather than the one day out of the year that we can’t see each other because of the distance.

I used to feel like I was the only one who could not be with their boyfriend on Valentine’s Day, but after a couple years of being in college I realized I have met almost more people who are in long-distance relationships rather than not. In fact, 25 to 50 percent of college students live away from their significant other. For those couples who might be looking at spending time a part beyond their undergrad studies you should know that according to the U.S. Census Bureau, commuter marriages have also become increasingly common. About 3.6 million Americans live apart from their spouses.

You might be feeling a bit sad, especially when your friends start talking about their dates for Valentine’s Day. However, toss the jealousy aside because there are plenty of ways to spend Valentine’s Day with your significant other, even if the both of you are not in the same room. Here are a few ideas on how to spice up your long distance relationship on Valentine’s Day.

  1. Skype Dinner Date.

Guys, suit up, and ladies put on that Little Black Dress. Just because you both can’t go out to dinner does not mean you both can’t have a romantic dinner. It’s simple. start making your dinner, you both could even Skype while cooking. Plan your time to eat, and maybe light a few candles. Voila! The both of you can enjoy each others company over dinner. The dinner conversation might be better than usual.

  1. Surprise Love Letter and Gifts

Nothing is more special than a love letter. Rather you are living together or living 1500 miles away. Telling your girlfriend/ boyfriend how much they truly mean to you will only reinforce the love that the two of you have already established. Even a nice gift that you know he/she has been wanting or even doing an inexpensive do-it-yourself gift. It’s the thought that counts.

  1. Have flowers or their favorite food delivered.

For guys, surprising your girl with a bouquet of red roses to her front door step or work would win her over and show her friends/ co-workers what a thoughtful guy you are. Make sure you know her schedule and try to figure out when would be the best time to catch her. For girls if your boyfriend has a favorite restaurant that has delivery see if you can surprise him with dinner, he would love the gesture and he would be reminded of what an awesome girlfriend he has.
