Award and Football Season: One in the Same

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Girls all know the beginning of a new year marks the start of award season. The nominations are in and it’s time for our favorite actors, actresses, and singers to be recognized for all their hard work from the previous year. From the Golden Globes to the Grammy’s to the Oscar’s, award season is every girl’s favorite time. It’s funny how it lands right around the same time as guys are gearing up for the Super Bowl. Award season falls right in the middle of the football playoff season, which leaves men glued to their TV’s almost every Sunday and Monday night during the fall season. Just like girls can’t wait for Sunday to come to watch their favorite actors or singers bring home awards, guys can’t wait for the one sacred day they’ve been waiting for all season — Super Bowl Sunday. Men look forward to watching their favorite teams play football every week. During award season, Sunday’s are a day when girls can finally sit back and enjoy all the nominees, gowns, and of course the hosts of the show. This year, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were absolutely perfect together as usual while hosting the Golden Globes.

Most guys cheer on their favorite football teams from September to January or until February if their team makes it to the end. However, seeing some of the great films or hearing an excellent song from the previous year always makes the award experience that more exciting when you know who the nominees are. A typical Sunday for most men during football season, and especially during the playoffs, is a case of beer and the TV channel on ESPN. During award season, Sunday’s are a girl’s excuse to get together with their roommates and friends to indulge in the latest gossip or to recap what happened over the weekend. The night usually consists of catching up while sipping on their favorite glass of wine and procrastinating homework due the upcoming week.

Even though the shows usually don’t start until 8 p.m., girls are most likely already sitting at their TV screens around five or six watching E! Live from the Red Carpet. Seeing the mani cam and shoe camera while catching an interview with their favorite actor or singer is the sole purpose of why tuning into the pre-show is so important. Enjoying the red carpet of each show during award season starts off the whole night right. Watching the pre-show, award show, and the after party is the only way you get the full experience. For guys, the whole day is usually devoted to watching football, but not just for who they’re rooting for, they also have to watch for the outcome of their fantasy teams.

While actually watching award shows, girls always pay close attention when their favorite actor or singer is up for an award. If their preferred choice wins, they act as if they won something themselves. If their first pick doesn’t get what they deserve, not watching the winners acceptance speech hopefully makes them forget their favorite was just cheated out of a win. Award season would not be complete without a Monday recap of the big night. Watching Fashion Police on E! and hearing descriptions of the gowns from Joan Rivers and her panel of fashion critics is the perfect way to wrap up the show. Her harsh yet accurate dress critiques are hilarious to hear. While girls are recapping the latest award show on E!, guys are watching highlights from Sunday’s big games on ESPN.

Don’t get me wrong, girls can love football just like guys may want to tune in to see their favorite actor win an Oscar. In reality, most girls are indulging in award night parties with their closest friends and a bottle of wine, while men are glued to their screens with their friends finishing off a case of Bud Light eager to see how the games turn out. It’s funny to me that while football season is coming to a close for the year, award shows are gearing up for their upcoming season. Football season is mostly every guy’s favorite time of year. On the other hand, girls are eager to see if their favorite actors, actresses, or singers bring home the award of the night.

Whether you were rooting for Peyton Manning to win the Super Bowl, or Jennifer Lawrence to win Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes, you have to admit one thing. Football season and award season have way more in common than you ever knew.  A time for guys to indulge in what they love best and a way for girls to scope out who they love best, Leo of course!
