Mythbusters: RA

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Butler chapter.

Being an RA, while simultaneously not sacrificing my undeniable amazingness, is one of the toughest things I have ever had to do. I think RAs are completely misrepresented in the media and on Butler which is why I am writing this article.

We do not all love icebreakers.

Lmao, but I do. I am going to be honest, at any given time, I have 2 truths and a lie. However, that still never stopped me from groaning in protest whenever a teacher or event director said it was “icebreaker time”.  That being said, whether we like them or not, we do them because we genuinely think it may help people get to know each other. So, if you have to do it anyway, you might as well listen to what your peers say and make the most out of it.

I don’t want to have a unit meeting either.

I don’t gather a bunch of disgruntled college students in one room for the fun of it. My boss tells me that I have to have a unit meeting, so I do. Why? Because she is the deciding factor on if my room and board will be free. If you want me to stop bugging you, write me a check.

Why is your door open?

Don’t drink with your door open. Don’t smoke with your door open. Don’t scream during quiet hours with your door open. You are making it impossible for me to give you the benefit of the doubt. You have forced my hand. Thanks bud.

I’m not a stick in the mud, I am nervous.

To my friends, the reason I don’t want you drinking in my presence is not because ResLife has changed me. It is because my job and the future I have worked so hard for is always on the line. I am not judging you for drinking. However, I have had to document several people for being in a room with alcohol (even if they weren’t drinking), and I do not want to be the next victim of that trap.

Say hi to me please.

I have dedicated a good part of my life to my residents well-being. So would it kill y’all to wave at me in the hallway?

And for goodness sakes, don’t lie to me.

I know you are going out. I have zero jurisdiction at the senior houses. If I ask you what’s up, I am just making conversation. There is no reason for you to lie and tell me you are having ‘a nice night inside’ with freshly curled hair and the latest bodysuit on.

When I end my email with, “Ross Love”, I mean it.

I love you guys, and believe it or not, most RAs love their unit, too.
