Why New Girl Is The Best

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

After watching the Pilot episode of New Girl, how could you not be in love? I know I was in love immediately. The characters – Jess (Zooey Deschanel), Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Winston (Lamorne Morris), and Cece (Hannah Simone) – undeniably make the show great, but the storyline is also hilarious. The show, which aired on FOX in 2011 and is currently in its third season, stars a bubbly and “adorkable” teacher Jess, who catches her boyfriend cheating and needs to quickly find a new place to live. She stumbles upon three male roommates – Nick (a worn-out, broke law school dropout who is now a bartender), Schmidt (a ostentatious, over-the-top businessman), and Winston (a former professional athlete who currently doesn’t have an occupation) – on Craigslist and soon enough the three seemingly different male characters and eccentric female character are living in an LA loft together. All in all, this dysfunctional group will surely make you laugh.

If you haven’t seen an episode of New Girl yet, I highly suggest starting from season one and catching up fast. Because it’s great. There are only a few shows that I legitimately become addicted to, and New Girl is one of them. Since the first two seasons are on Netflix, it was incredibly easy to catch up and finish the two seasons before the season 3 premiere that aired Tuesday September 17th at 9 pm EST.

Below are a few reasons why New Girl is the best:

1. It’s (kind of) a modern version of Friends

Okay, for all you Friends lovers out there I’m sure you’re thinking, “Nothing can compare to Friends!” But coming from a serious Friends lover herself, New Girl really does compare. It’s a fun, modern twist on Friends – it stars a group of close friends who form strong friendships and/or romantic relationships with one another, it’s plot is easy to follow and relatable, the premise and character development is hilarious, you’ll feel like the characters are your real friends, and you can watch the episodes over and over again and they’ll still be entertaining. And, it’s seriously funny.

2. It’s short and sweet (only 30 minute episodes)

It’s often difficult for busy college students to find time to religiously watch a whole series of a show, but New Girl is only 30 minutes! So, instead of Facebook stalking that guy in your PR class, watch a show! New Girl episodes air very Tuesday night, and if you’re occupied on Tuesday nights, the new episodes are available online on Hulu Plus or FOX a day later. So take a short break from all that studying (or Facebooking), and unwind with an episode of New Girl.

3. It’s totally relatable

Everyone likes a show that’s relatable to his or her life – and New Girl is definitely relatable to the 20-something college-age (particularly female) crowd. Since the characters are in their late 20s, all with different personalities, it is easy to relate to them – or at least relate to one. And at the end of the day, even though their lives are dysfunctional and often crazy, I’d still love to be them living in a rundown loft-style apartment in LA! It’s almost like they’re living the realistic, after-college “dream” – struggling with breakups, job loss, and financial issues, but doing so together.
