Resolutions You Made for the Semester & Reasons You Won’t Be Keeping Them

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.
  1. Going to the gym every day.  This is probably the most popular resolution ever, especially among the young women crowd.  That’s just great.  I mean, really, it is.  Planning to lose some weight for spring by getting in shape?  It’s a great idea.  And I don’t think resolving to go to the gym is a fail of a resolution…I just think maybe you should be reasonable about it.  If you set impossible expectations for yourself, you are doomed to fail.  Example: if you’ve only been to the FitRec once in your entire BU career, going every day probably isn’t going to happen.  Just be real.  Start out small, like once a week, or a few times a week.  If you make a routine of it, it will be easier to go more frequently.  Plus you won’t feel like a failure for not being able to stick with your resolution.  And if in the process you slowly become a gym rat, more power to you, Jillian Michaels.
  2. Never eating sugar or bread again.  The thing is, you can’t just stop eating certain foods for good all of the sudden.  Well, you can, but most likely you’ll get a huge craving for sugar and bread and binge on these two items, causing feelings of self-loathing and self-pity to blossom in your heart.   Wish I could say I didn’t know this from experience.  As important as it is to eat healthy and stay away from foods that will harm you, it is also important to do this in a reasonable way.  Maybe just making a resolution to drink skim milk, stay away from white bread, and order your Starbuck’s skinny will prove more successful than saying you’re never eating certain foods again.
  3. Getting all A’s.  Improving your grades for the semester is an honorable goal.  This being said, it may be a better idea to focus more on your academic deterrents than on the end result.  Yes, getting straight A’s would be fantastic, but you have to earn those A’s.  And it’s a lot easier to earn these good grades if you aren’t going out every night, choosing friends over homework, and staying up till 2 every morning.  It also means you should go to class and pay attention.  Doing all of these things will ensure getting the best possible grades you can get.  Improving your GPA isn’t impossible.  You just have to be willing to make sacrifices and work for it.
  4. Finding a boyfriend.  Just stop.  Wanting to be in a relationship so bad that you make it a resolution leads to desperation.  Desperation is not only gross, but it can also get you into a relationship that is mediocre or just plain unhealthy.  Plus, you are young and in college…why do you want to tie yourself down before it’s completely necessary?  I have a better idea.  Here it is: learn to live for yourself and learn to love yourself.  Carrie Bradshaw once said that “the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself.”  And do you know what?  She was right.  Completely right.  Many girls forget that in order to find someone to love them, they have to love themselves first.  Don’t make that mistake.
  5. Abstaining from alcohol, therefore staying away from bad decisions and excess calories.  Um, yeah, good luck with that one.
