Maddie’s Monthly Makeup Roundup: October Edition!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Hi everyone! If you read my first Maddie’s Monthly Makeup Roundup from September, welcome back! If you did not, let me introduce myself! My name is Maddie, and I am a freshman at Boston University. When I’m not studying or over-drinking coffee, I love to focus on all things makeup, fashion, and beauty. For this reason, I began a monthly column to explain my favorites from the month and why I think every makeup lover also needs them in their life. So without further ado, let’s see my favorites from the spooky month of October!

Denessa Myricks Blush

This product is a great all-around product for eyes, lips, and face. Denessa Myricks liquid blush in the shade “Ballet Slippers” is described as a classic blush shade, and I absolutely agree. The shade is not super red, nor super pink, but gives the perfect look as if you just walked into a warm building from the cold outside. Whenever I wear this blush, I love to use it on my eyes, face, and sometimes also my lips, so that there is a cohesive color throughout my look that ties my face together.

Although I mentioned that I use this all over my face, one drawback to the product is that you cannot blot it on rapidly and haphazardly and hope for the best. The first time I applied the blush, I applied three to four massive dots on my cheeks as I would with the Glossier Cloud Paints (another favorite of mine) and started rubbing it in with my finger. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that this was a massive mistake as my face was apple red and all the product had ever-so-delightfully clung to the side of my face. The second time I used the product I had learned my lesson, and I only used one tiny dot on the upper part of my cheekbone to create the perfect flushed look. So while I do absolutely suggest this product, I also suggest maybe not using it if you are in a rush or impatient, as what could be a perfect blush will ultimately make you look like you forgot to take off your clown Halloween makeup.

MAC Russian Red Lipstick

Finally, my last product for the month was a classic, the MAC Cosmetics matte lipstick in the shade “Russian Red.” I have the mini version of the lipstick, but the smaller size does not mean that it delivers any less of a perfectly blue-red punch. Personally, I like the mini version of the red lipstick, as it makes me feel more in control of the tube during application so I look like I actually knew how to apply the lipstick when I did so. The shade, like mentioned, is a blue-red to the fullest extent, so it will make your smile look whiter and compliment almost any skin tone!

Putting on this lipstick, although daunting with a mask, makes me feel very in charge of my life even when I am not. Red lipstick makes me feel like a Girl Boss CEO of some major company and definitely gives me way too much confidence walking down Commonwealth Avenue. With that being said, I think that every makeup wearer should have a lipstick, red or otherwise, that makes them feel in charge of their lives, just as MAC Russian Red does for me. Although it is just the makeup talking, I love the confidence the lipstick gives me even for a moment of my day so that I can feel my best self while I take on Boston.

Whether you buy these or not, I hope reading my monthly roundup has inspired you to wear what makes you feel confident. Because that’s what’s most important when wearing makeup — feeling confident and powerful.

Those were my favorite makeup picks for October, so stay tuned for November’s list!
