Fall Makeup Trends and How to Wear Them

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, summer trends phase out and fall trends start to phase in. I absolutely love fall and the fall makeup styles that come with it. This season, I’ve picked out some up and coming trends and provided some tips, tricks, and awesome products to help you guys pull these styles off!

The first trend I want to highlight is monochromatic looks, particularly in colors that are popular now. Some on-trend colors to use include warm tones like berries, browns, oranges and burgundies, as well as softer colors, like dusty mauves and pinks. Pick a color and use it all over the eyes, lips, and face; I would recommend utilizing different textures and shades to give interest and dimension to the face. You might do a shiny, glossy lid, satin-y cheeks, and add a statement matte lip to make the look pop. Orange is definitely having a moment; be bold and swipe it all over the eyes, cheeks and lips. If you want a more subtle look, rosy colors are universally flattering and always chic. Use multipurpose products to make this sophisticated look even simpler! Maybelline’s Face Studio Master Glaze in “Make a Mauve,” is a great drugstore option, and Nars The Multiple in “Puerto Vallarta” is a beautiful, shimmering, on trend tangerine.

In a world of matte liquid lipsticks, lip gloss is making a comeback. And no, thankfully it’s not the ultra glittery and super sticky scented lip smackers of our youth. No, lip gloss is coming back in a much more refined and chic way, with brands like Fenty Beauty, Glossier, and Colourpop stocking amazing glosses in a variety of shades, finishes, and price points. Fenty Beauty Universal Gloss Bomb has a slight pinky-gold sheen, while the Glossier lip gloss is completely clear to give lips an ultra shiny, wet look. If you like your gloss to pack a bit more of a punch, Colourpop’s “Sookie” is a rich berry that’s perfect for fall!

Another look I’ve been loving is a strong inner corner highlight. Really dramatic, super sparkly inner corner accents have just been really calling my name lately. I think it brightens your eyes and draws attention to people’s most interesting feature. I personally love using pigments and glitters from Nyx Cosmetics; some of my favorites are “Diamond,” “Brighten Up,” “Froyo,”, and “Vegas, Baby!” I also love their glitters in “Ice” and “Crystal.” I just use a bit of glitter glue or any sort of tacky base and really pack the pigment on for a super easy glam look!

It’s time to say goodbye to dewy summer skin. Fall is definitely about more matte skin; not powdery or cakey skin, but decidedly less glowy. Some good matte foundations include the new Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation as well as the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte 24hr Foundation. If you don’t want to necessarily invest in a matte foundation, buy a mattifying powder! The Rimmel London Stay Matte pressed powder in Translucent is an excellent drugstore option, while the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders are a nice investment if you’re looking to spend more in the pressed powder department.  There are tons of loose powders on the market as well. Some of my favorites include the Coty Airspun Powder and the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder.

Metallic eye looks have always been a favorite of mine, and they were a favorite on the runway this season as well. For a bold statement look, Maybelline makes great creme eye shadows in a variety of gold and coppery shades, that you can swipe on for some high impact shine. My personal favorite is the Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo eyeshadow in “Bold Gold.”

Fall is finally here — make sure your style fits the season!
