Dorm Room Decadence #2

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Study Break Snack

Lately I’ve found myself dreading the cold and bitter wind that comes with running to CityCo or the dining hall for food in between study sessions. Not only that, but this weather makes me constantly hungry for this “comfort food.” Luckily I’ve finally found a great snack that I can keep in my room, lasts for a long time, and is healthy, too! My snack of choice right now: Trader Joe’s hummus with pita chips or carrots.

Trader Joe’s is known for its healthy foods and variety. When I went in the other day and saw an entire section of hummus, I fell in love! My favorite one right now is “Chipotle Pepper.” It has a slightly spicy essence and is so flavorful. That paired with salty Stacy’s whole-wheat pita chips from any grocery store (or you can go with Trader Joe’s pita chips which are great too) is the perfect remedy for my mid-day cravings. I used to buy hummus from CityCo but Trader Joe’s options are cheaper (they’re about $2 per container) and there are so many flavors: roasted garlic, original, even edamame, and more. Make it healthier by pairing the hummus with celery or carrot sticks and you’ll be refueled for some more studying.

Holiday Treats

Over winter break I made sugar cookies for the holidays and it was a relaxing, fun way to spread seasonal cheer. This recipe is from the Fanny Farmer cookbook, one that I have used with my family ever since I could remember. These yummy cookies are super easy to make, and when cut into hearts and topped with red or pink sprinkles they are the perfect way to tell your friends and roommates that you love them! So if you don’t have a kitchen call someone you know who does and make it a holiday activity (whether it’s Valentine’s Day or President’s Day–whenever there’s an excuse to bake delicious treats!)

SUGAR COOKIES

1/4 pound butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp cream or milk
1 1/4 cups flour
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking powder

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Cream the butter, then gradually add the sugar, beating until light. Add the egg, vanilla, and cream or milk, and beat thoroughly.

Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder together, add to the first mixture, and blend well. Arrange by teaspoonfuls on cookie sheets, 1 inch apart. Top with sprinkles before baking.

Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. If you’re not putting sprinkles then pink, white, or chocolate icing works as well.
