Angelina’s ‘80s Archive: May 27, 2022

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I can’t believe I’m nearing the end of my Her Campus tenure. When I leave BU, I know that writing this column will be one of the things I miss most. As the end of the year approaches, most seniors are looking forward to graduation. Though I’m not saying I’m not, the date I want to talk about today falls just a few days later. It is a date that any ‘80s aficionado will appreciate: May 27, 2022.

“What’s so important about May 27?” you may ask. Well, I’m here to tell you. It’s only the date that two hugely influential pieces of pop-culture return to the screen. This seemingly ordinary Friday is the release date of both Top Gun: Maverick and the first part of Stranger Things 4

First, I want to call attention to Top Gun. Since I first saw the first movie (read more about how I feel about it here), I have been waiting for the second installment to be released. Its release date has been pushed back so many times due to Covid that I actually tried to go see it in November only to be disappointed when I found out it had, understandably, been pushed back yet again.

I think that, as flawed as it is, the 1986 film is incredibly fun. Also, the flight scenes are fantastic. Given the technology today, there is a possibility that they will get even better. I just hope for two things:

1. That this sequel preserves the sometimes goofily serious tone of the original.

2. That Maverick has grown up a bit by this point in his life.

By the looks of the newest trailer, the latter may be too much to ask, but I am no less excited to head to the theater!

Next is Stranger Things. The fact that this show came out the summer after my sophomore year of high school boggles my mind. 6 years later, I’ve re-watched the series several times, and I’m years older than the teen characters who started out around my age, or about a year older than me.

Like all fans, I’ve been long anticipating Stranger Things’ return. The first teaser came out just before the pandemic, on my twentieth birthday (oh, how things have changed), and I’ve been on the edge of my seat waiting for a release date since then. Now, with not one but two parts on the horizon (the second premieres in July), there is so much to look forward to. I cannot wait to see what character combinations we get this time around.

Clear your schedules and mark your calendars because this summer is starting off with a bang.
