11 Things You Should NOT Be for Halloween This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Every year when Halloween rolls around, people show up in a variety of problematic costumes. Now I’m not saying not to have fun or be creative, because creativity is what Halloween is all about; you just need to be respectful. In addition, there are some things literally everyone will be this year because 2016 was one long joke and we all need to laugh at ourselves. Save yourself some side eye and find out the 11 things NOT to be for Halloween this year.

1. A Sexy Native American

This is kind of a no brainer; Halloween is not an excuse to be racist. This is not the first article to say this, and it won’t be the last.

2. Harambe

It’s kind of a gray area whether this is problematic or not, but it’s just SO overdone. At this point, every frat boy under the sun has dressed up as Harambe. C’mon, you can think of something more creative.

3. Literally anything involving blackface/brownface

              Nope.

4.) Harley Quinn

Is it a good costume? Yes. Will you be one of literally hundreds of Harley Quinn’s walking around Allston? Also yes.

5. A Sexy “Harem Honey”

Just. No.

6. A Sexy Tarantula

That is nightmare fuel, not a Halloween costume.  If you want to be scary, be scary, but this is too much.

7. Donald Trump

Just because he’s a joke of a candidate doesn’t make him a good costume, especially if you’re going to use it as an excuse to say offensive things all night.

8. Hillary Clinton

Have I considered wearing a blazer and booty shorts to be Hillary for Halloween? Of course I have. Brace yourself for hundreds of Hillary’s, and maybe try not to be one of them.

9. Anything that makes fun of mental illness

Gross.

10. Caitlyn Jenner

First of all, she came out over a year ago so you missed a Halloween to be offensive. Second of all, LITERALLY WHY?

11.) Kim Kardashian Getting Robbed

Literally what is wrong with some people? Someone’s trauma is not an excuse for a costume.

There you have it, 11 things to not be for Halloween this year. Hopefully after reading this you can get that final confirmation that whatever sexist or racist costume you may have been planning on is a terrible idea that should never see the light of day.
