Three Things We Learned From Elizabeth Smart

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Collegiettes, if you attended the Elizabeth Smart event recently held by SASS, (or if you weren’t able to make it!) here are three things we all certainly learned from her.

1.      Kidnapping can happen when it is least expected.

Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped on June 5, 2002 at the age of fourteen. She was taken from her bed in the middle of the night, which she thought was the safest place in the world. It is important to always be aware of your surroundings and take as many precautions as possible.

2.      We shouldn’t take what we have for granted

Sometimes our positive mindsets can get clouded by problems going on in our lives. We think that our lives are terrible and we forget that some people, like Elizabeth Smart, have experienced worst. Next time you feel upset and unmotivated, think about how lucky you are.

3.      No matter what happens, it is best to move on and be happy.

After she was safe, Elizabeth could have wallowed in self-pity and let the nine months she was held captive prevent her from being happy. Instead, Elizabeth put the past behind her and began living her life to the fullest. Elizabeth uses her story to promote child safety. She now is married and has a daughter, Chloe.
