Sochi Security Threats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

The Olympics are supposed to be a time where the world puts aside their differences and unites in peace to watch the world’s top athletes compete. However, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi are proving to be less-than peaceful as there are many terrorist threats surrounding the games.  The Olympic athletes should be celebrating the amazing accomplishment of making it to the Olympic Games, but instead the athletes and their families are finding themselves nervous to fly and stay at the hotels in Sochi.

Before the Olympics started, they were surrounded with threats of bombings. The greatest concern was suicide bombers, which are typically hard to catch before they take action. U.S. lawmakers have warned that the terror threats aimed at Sochi are real and are highly concerned at the possibility of an act of violence. One issue is how close all of the different event locations are located, which would allow a bomb to be even more detrimental.

There have also been threats of bombs on airplanes traveling from the United States to Russia. A new development found that there could be potential bombs hidden in toothpaste containers.  Consequentially, no carry on liquids are being allowed from flights to Russia out of anywhere in the U.S.

So far there have not been any security or terror issues in Sochi, but everyone is on high alert. Even with tight security, athletes, their families, and other visitors there to watch the games are still on edge.
