What is the Virus?

The Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms and lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is very uncommon.

What Spring Break destinations currently have active cases of the virus?

–        Puerto Rico

–        Costa Rica

–        Dominican Republic

–        Mexico

–        Panama

–        Saint martin

–        U.S. Virgin Islands

–        There are many others places experiencing cases, so make sure you check before you go!

What can I do to protect myself from the virus?

–        Avoid mosquito bites

–        Mosquitoes that spread Zika virus bite mostly during the day

–        Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants

–        Wear insect repellent.  Hint- you’re supposed to apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent

–        If you are not sleeping in a closed room on spring break consider bringing a mosquito bed net!
