5 Surprising Benefits of Being in Her Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Other than the occasional free pizza and survival kits of course…

1.     You get to network with like-minded, empowered women.

By joining your school’s Her Campus chapter, you are opening yourself up to networking with motivated women (and sometimes men!) who are passionate about what they do.  Her Campus members are often involved in other clubs, internships, and activities around campus.  Not only will you build potentially lifelong friendships with them, but you will also be able to network with them professionally.  Through networking in Bryant University’s Her Campus chapter, our members have handed in applications to write for the New York Times and interned with Cosmopolitan Magazine.

2.       You get real, documented experience.

How many college students can say that they are published writers?!  Not many – and Her Campus gives you the ability to get your writing published.  Whether it’s a funny list of memes about a bad haircut or serious article on issues at your college, and whether you’re a journalism major or still learning your comma rules, Her Campus will help transform your ideas into excellent, published writing.  This is an accomplishment that can be shared on your resume or in job interviews.  Regardless of the field you hope to work in, writing articles for your school’s Her Campus is a fun and exciting way to get marketable experience.  Another benefit – when people google your name, your Her Campus articles will come up!

3.     You have the ability to make a difference.

Although a lot of Her Campus’ articles have to do with the coolest new scarves and nail polish trends (which is totally important, by the way!), they can be very serious too.  Many Her Campus chapters have published important investigative articles dealing with campus, local, and national issues.  Take a look at this powerful and educational Her Campus Cal Poly article about Meghan Trainor’s lyrics in “All about That Bass” and this Her Campus Bryant article that contributed to more open communication and safety forums at Bryant University.  By being a part of Her Campus, YOU have the ability to make a change and spread awareness with your writing and your ideas.

4.     Employers LOVE Her Campus “alumni”

Believe it or not, employers know what Her Campus is, and it speaks to them if it’s on your resume.  Employers know how being a part of Her Campus prepares college students for the real world.  First of all, it shows that you have acquired a skill that they want their employees to have – writing, and even better, journalistic writing.  This is especially beneficial to communications, public relations, and journalism majors.  Second of all, it shows employers that you take commitment and responsibility seriously.  You always meet you’re her Campus deadlines – not so different from your professional deadlines someday.  According to Annette Maggiacomo, the Vice President for Public Relations at Duffy & Shanley, she looks for applicants who have had experience with Her Campus because she finds they tend to do a great job.

5.     You get to do something you love!
