5 Misconceptions About CIS Majors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

When people ask, “So what are you majoring in?” they seem to be quite surprised to hear the answer “I’m majoring in computer information systems!” This answer is often followed by a look of shock and disbelief that someone would actually major in something as awful as computer information systems. In reality, it isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. To help erase these common thoughts people have about majoring in computer information systems, we’ve put together a list of some misconceptions people have about being a CIS major.

1.      “Isn’t CIS really hard?”

It’s just as hard as any other field people decide to go into.

2.      “Is it even a good field to go into?”

Yes and in fact, any field is a good field if you work hard enough in it.

3.      “Isn’t CIS just like computer science?”

Nope. CIS’s focus is organization and CIS’s focus is software.

4.      “CIS is so boring”

Maybe to you it is, but to the people majoring in it, it isn’t (hence why we’re majoring in it).

5.      “Aren’t all the jobs in the CIS field taken?”

Actually, it’s a growing field and the need for people with the skills majoring in CIS gives you is increasing.
