3 Machines To Try At The Gym (& How To Use Them!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

With spring break right around the corner you may have noticed an increase in people at the gym and an increase in your drive to exericse.  If you’re bored of the basic 30-minutes on the elliptical, a work out on the stair master, or the daunting idea of a treadmill, here are a few new drills to achieve that beach body.

  1. Group Exercise: Many of us don’t realize the number of classes given at our gym throughout the week, the various times they’re scheduled, or even that they are all free.  Spinning is offered at least twice a day, Monday through Friday.  That’s right, twice a day.  In just one 45 minute spinning class, the average person burns 480 calories.  Among the other classes are; kickboxing, yoga, Jillian Michaels, and abs.  All great ways to mix up your workout routine!  Check here for the group exercise schedule.
  1. Leg Machines:  they aren’t as scary as they seem.  For starters, the Leg Press machine is nice and easy!  Sit down, put the appropriate weight on the machine and start off with 3 sets of 10.  The Leg Extension machine targets your quad muscle, as well, but is a little more challenging-still a sit down machine though!  The Leg Curl might look a bit cheesy because you need to lay on your stomach to do it, but it targets your hamstrings and tones the back of your legs!  For any leg machines starting off with 3 sets of 10 should do the trick for spring break.
  2. Arm Weights: Flabby underarms are not in for spring or tank top season, so here are a few ways to tone up your arms.  In terms of machines, one that is really helpful is the Back and Arm machine, this machine is another sit down one that involves  pulling the top bar down to your chest.  This one will make you sore for sure!  If you aren’t into the machines for working out your arms, there are a million ways to tone them up with free weights.  Grab a couple 10 pound weights, simple curls and a standing shoulder fly will do the trick.
