What are Sorority Girls Really Like?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

Ok, when you think of a sorority girl what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

According to Urban Dictionary, the top definition stated, “A sorority girl is a female college student belonging to a social sorority. She may or may not live in a sorority house. She will normally be seen wearing Chanel sunglasses, a Northface jacket, and bag representing her sorority’s letters. Sorority girls are typically high maintenance and very uppity. Most are white middle and upper middle class girls that are spoiled and extremely materialistic. These bleach blondes are extremely loud and spend most of their time shopping and partying with frat boys. Often confused to be sluts…”

Apart from having a bag representing our letters, this definition is false, especially for the sororities at Brenau University. While there may be some girls who hold it to be true, the majority of us do not. The stereotype sorority girls have received originated from people on the outside looking in who don’t understand or wish to understand the bond that sisters share within their sorority.

There are so many different things that are present in women of sororities other than the party mentality. To be honest, if a group of people not in a sorority went out and did things that we do it would be considered normal.

Brenau is a dry campus, so here we don’t run into the problem of alcohol that most sororities deal with. However, when it is added to the mix, it would be just like any other group of girls who decide to drink together and go to parties with guys. The only difference is we party with Fraternities that invite us to party with them. It’s another part of the Greek Community world that individuals outside of it don’t understand because they don’t appreciate the brother/sisterhood of it.

These people have become our family and our support system. Yes, we pay for our membership, but it’s not paying for our friendship. Dues go toward our many activities and socials that are meant to bring us closer together and to enjoy our time in college.

Another note on money—a lot of people believe that sorority girls function off of “Daddy’s money”. Some girls may have help from their parents, but a lot of girls have jobs that pay for their dues. By suggesting that every sorority girl is a spoiled brat is an unfair judgment and another social stereotype that needs to be corrected.
