In this day and age it seems hard to come by people who still appreciate a good old-fashioned mix CD. My friends and I love to make and exchange mixes, but in general, the mix CD is a dying art. It’s sad, because one of the best feelings you get is when someone gives you a mix! That physical CD, with a clever title, and maybe a cool design in sharpie markers, makes you feel all the feels because you know that person put time and effort into crafting the perfect combo of upbeat and not-so-upbeat tunes (that obviously have some sort of hidden message, too…duh!!). Personally, when I make a mix, I try to put a few songs on it that the intended listener probably knows, and then the rest are similar songs/artists. I always try to tell some sort of story. And I ALWAYS listen to it all the way through before burning it onto that good ol’ blank CD. Yes, sometimes it’s fun to just hit “shuffle,” but the best kind of mix is the one with careful placement of each song (in my opinion at least) and a witty title.

Because I’m such an advocate for the entity that is the mix CD, I’ve taken the liberty of creating a mix (courtesy of the Her Campus Spotify account, so all of you can listen to it) as an extra way to show my appreciation, and also provide you all with some groovy tunes. Of course it has a snazzy title and theme, but you’ll have to listen to it to find out! Sadly, it’s not a physical CD (and there are commercials..erghhhh), but that’s because a physical copy is more individualized, and this playlist is directed toward all of our readers (a much wider audience). What I’m getting at here is that I think more people should make mixes for each other! It’s not only a great way to acquire new music, but it also makes for an awesome, thoughtful gift (that happens to be budget-friendly, too)! So, what’re you waiting for?! Go listen to the Spotify mix to get your gears rolling and then make a mix CD for somebody special!
