Miley Cyrus: Her Evolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Miley Cyrus splashes onto every front page of every gossip magazine every day. It’s not like there is a shortage of celeb doings to cover. Miley has just become one of the most talked about pop/hip-hop/former Disney stars. This past year she wrecked our world and any ideas we had about her.

The Beginning:

Miley first stepped onto the Hollywood scene when she begged her rich papa,  “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Billy Cyrus, to help her start her acting career. Former “Smiley” turned into Disney superstar Hannah Montana, who- shocker, was a super famous country singer.

Cyrus forced her way into our hearts and our ears and dominated Disney radio, TV and country music with her loud and distinctive voice.

After 4 successful seasons, Hannah left Disney and Miley continued her career. Most notably, Miley graced the cinematic screen with her hunk Liam Hemsworth in Nicholas Spark’s The Last Song. The two famously made out on a beach and moved their romance into the actual world, or as close as Hollywood can be to the real world. Miley met 22-year old Liam when she was only sixteen and they were engaged just a few years later.

Miley tried desperately to break away from her Hannah Montana image with some daring pop videos, implying certain recreational activities but nothing hit us as hard as her new BANGERZ attitude.

And Now We’re Here:

Within this past year, Miley has completely reinvented her image. Cyrus dyed her hair bleach blonde, and chopped off her luscious curls. The new Miley is searching for an edgy, trendy, and pop/hip hop Miley. The all white wardrobe is somewhat of an ironic statement. Every statement she makes includes some sort of sexual comment and activity and her songs address her broken heart along with her drug-ridden new lifestyle. It’s no wonder Liam and Miley broke up.

Liam proposed to Miley in the middle of her transformation. She was rearranging her musical career and making a name based on talent and not status, but that soon vanished. Once Miley decided what she really wanted, she went full force into her new persona. Ultimately, the 16-year old Miley was so far from the 20-year old Miley, and both Liam and Miley decided that their days apart should become permanent.

Miley’s split with her fiancé was made public the day after her infamous VMA performance. To be honest, she wasn’t doing that much. Britney kissed Madonna and Miley grinded on Robin Thicke. And Miley knows what she is/was doing. This past summer, during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Miley told the host that she had hired and started living with her biggest fan to help amp up her image:

“She’s more than a stalker because she’s so obsessed, she knows things about to break VEVO records, which we did with her help…She just knows everything.”

Shortly, after the VMA’s, Miley released her most sexualized music video for “Wrecking Ball.” The song chronicles her heartbreak and attitude as she approaches her music career. In a pivotal shot, Miley cries to the camera, imitating Sinead O’Connor, 80’s Irish pop singer that Miley has looked up to since she was little. As a response, Sinead wrote an open letter to Miley warning her that she has become way too over sexualized and has prostituted herself to the music industry. Miley responded with a twitter rant, comparing Sinead to Amanda Bynes (both suffer from bi-polar disorder) and retweeting photos of Sinead’s controversial SNL appearance where she ripped up a photo of the pope. At the end of it all, Miley calmed down and told Sinead that they could talk if she ever actually wanted to. To that, Sinead replied that the only time she would ever consider a conversation with Miley is in a mental institution.

Miley Just Keeps Trending:

Despite her public humping and celeb bashing, Miley is still proving she is a force to be reckoned with. MTV sponsored a documentary about the star discussing her controversial moments and new album, Bangerz, which was released earlier this week. Miley also asked to hosted SNL where she mocked herself, including taking jabs at her “We Can’t Stop” video, slinky wardrobe, and her overused tongue.

What’s Next?

As for her love life, Miley was spotted texting Rolling Stone co-founder’s rich elitist son, Theo Wenner. Wenner dated Liv Tyler but has yet to make an actual contribution to the world.

Miley’s new album, Bangerz, is actually pretty good. You can hear her country influences while blending her pop and hip-hop interests. The album features some awesome collaborations and keeps bouncing for all thirteen tracks.

Miley doesn’t look like she is going to stop twerking any time soon. So pull out your latex booty shorts and teddy bears and start dancing, because she can’t stop and she won’t stop. After all, she’s just being Miley.
