Fall’s Fab Five Fashions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Ladies, although the Waltham weather may indicate otherwise, fall is finally here. That means it is time to (neatly!) toss your white dresses and colorful sandals into storage and take out your warmer gear! Sure it’s usually discouraging to trade your florals for flannels, and your shorts and skirts for longer hemlines, but covering up has never looked so chic especially with this season’s must-have pieces! Here I’ll show you Fall’s Five most Fab pieces to guarantee you’re both weather-appropriate and style conscious!

1. The air becomes crisper, the leaves richer in color. Take note of these changes and integrate them into your style! Hats are a quick and easy way to add flair to any outfit. After months of inexhaustible heat, the first accessories you should integrate into your fall wardrobe are hats. This season, I’m all about fedoras, which return as fashion’s most chic accessory. To anticipate cooler weather, the previous straw form has been replaced by a felt alternative. I recommend you follow the season’s lead and select one in an autumnal hue, such as hunter green or a shade of orange or brown. Take a cue from celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and wear it tilted slightly forward over your forehead, exuding major attitude and fierceness.

2. I know the time of the year: It’s still too early for your winter coat, but you’re freezing. And somehow, the pile-on-four-sweaters approach just isn’t looking too pretty.
I present to you fall’s second fabulous item, the fur vest. Fur is an instant way to add glam and high-fashion to any look, and the vest’s absence of sleeves ensures that you don’t look like the abominable snowman (I admit – some people pull that look off well, but the vest is a safer, less overwhelming, option). The fur vest looks adorably elegant in a variety of lengths and colors. Belt it, pair it with leggings or skinny jeans and tall boots, and voila! Insta-chic! Worried about wearing real fur? Many designers and companies are producing faux fur options that are not only cheaper, but also lighter and even cuter than their real-fur alternatives.

3. This summer, I’m sure you noticed that wedges were everywhere. This autumn will follow suit. For this fall, I advise you buy a pair of wedged boots that are comfortable and have added height! The trend works with boots of all lengths and styles – tall boots, short boots, over-the-knee boots, even rainboots (Hunter has come out with wedged option)! Wedged boots are versatile because the heel is inconspicuous enough for daytime and for classes, but the height makes them fab enough for nighttime, too. Because of the added support on your foot from the wedge, discomfort will not be a problem with these heels. And due to the wide range of styles, they can be worn with just about any outfit!

4. Unique to this year’s fall season, the infamous maxiskirt has been joined by its long-forgotten sister, the midi. The midi is the perfect transition piece from summer to fall – as the weather gets cooler, we are forced to wear longer hemlines on our skirts. Unlike the bohemian maxi, however, the midi has a retro and uber-girly feel. Try one in either a bright color or a print over a sheer button down shirt and add a statement necklace!

 5. And finally, the most important piece of all this season: a defining autumn jacket. After all, with the cold weather encroaching upon us, you’ll be spending lots of time in a jacket – so it will haveto be cute! If you plan on alternating between the same few jackets, simpler is better to avoid  obvious mismatches, but play around with shape, color, and form. This season, the most popular shape is a boxy mod style. Don’t be fooled by its basic shape, though! The mod jacket was seen in runway shows throughout fall fashion week, and its form is quickly becoming one of the most popular around, replacing the fussiness of tailored jackets. Its classic and simple shape means that you can drape a scarf over the coat without the fear of fashion overload. Plus, there’s room to layer lots of sweaters underneath!
