Czech it Out: Sarah’s Semester in Prague

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

My semester abroad in Prague has flown by sooo quickly. Now that it’s May, I am so sad to think of returning back to a busy life, with the ability to use my iphone and be in contact all the time, and a drinking age of 21. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited to see everyone at home and be back in a country where I don’t get nervous to talk to locals, but studying abroad is such a great time and amazing experience and I am going to miss it all when I get back the States.

Prague is an amazing city and I am so happy I chose to come here. Despite the fact that the Czech Republic had the LONGEST winter in like 50 years while I was here, it is truly a beautiful and historical city. It is one of those places where you turn and see that all the buildings are all so pretty but all different types of architecture. Prague still has its original buildings unlike most in this area of Europe and I feel like that gives Prague so much character and old-time feeling. I’m also pretty sure Prague has by far the best (free) views a city can ask for, compared to the other European cities I’ve visited. Granted Prague is hilly, but that’s also great for trying to keep that study abroad-weight gain to a minimum. Yes, study abroad weight is actually a thing, but what do you expect when you’re on your own for the first time, surrounded by heavy local food, alcohol is super cheap (unique to the Czech Republic), and salad just doesn’t exist? But my friends and I have come up with a YOLO version for every place we go; cause you only study abroad once (i.e. YOBO=you only Budapest once). I was also lucky that Prague is a very easy city. It is not too big, so it was easy to get to know the city quickly and it makes it pretty walk-able.

Despite the fact the central Europe is very different than the U.S., I adapted pretty quickly and easily here, and I mostly just get homesick when I want a normal iced coffee on a hot day. But as my days dwindle away, I’m hoping to keep my finals preparation to a minimum-sorry mom and dad, and enjoy living abroad in Prague.

Andrea is a sociology major with minors in journalism and women's and gender studies. She is currently finishing her senior year at Brandeis University. She was born and reared in Los Angeles, CA, which does mean that she is a die-hard Laker fan… Sorry Bostonians. When Andrea is not routing on her favorite basketball team, she dedicates her time to her many passions. They include reading and writing about fashion, traveling, exploring new restaurants, spending time with friends, watching reality television (she has a weak spot for Bravo), shopping, and working out.
