We’ve all seen those dorm rooms on Pinterest boards. You know the ones, with matching bedding and decorations and most importantly, plants. Most plants can’t survive the stressful and high-risk college environment. Especially when deprived of sunlight and a stable temperature.

Plants are sensitive to extreme changes, so you have probably thrown out a ton of old, dying plants, trying to find something that doesn’t bring bugs in your dorm room. But putting a natural touch to your dorm room sometimes isn’t too far of a reach. Even if you are swamped with school work, there is a plant for everyone!

With Her Campus to the rescue, you can now have that perfect Pinterest dorm room with these top 5, highly recommended plants that can specifically thrive in your dorm with low maintenance.

1. PonyTail Palm

Member of the Agave family and classified as a succulent, this already shouts low maintenance. Native to Mexico, this plant is used to getting little amounts of water and surviving by storing water in its trunk. It is recommended that you let the soil dry out in-between watering, so about a week and a half. Also, even though it will survive in the low light in your dorm room, make sure to set it outside during the summer.

2. Snake Plant

A snake plant is perfect if your dorm room has a dryer climate. Native to West Africa, this plant thrives on low light and is actually classified as drought resistant. In the winter, water every two months. All other times water after two weeks as this plant is susceptible to root rot.

3. Pothos Plant

Into decoration but don’t want to buy the cheap looking vines? Then pothos plant is for you! Native to Florida this plant thrives in the warm, humid climate and will grow towards sunlight to keep itself healthy. You only have to water this plant once a week. And if you want, put hooks on a wall and watch it grow around them!

4. Yucca cane

Looking for bamboo but it’s not in season? Not to worry, this plant has the characteristics of bamboo but it can tolerate a whole lot more. Native to Mexico and the Caribbean, this plant is classified as drought resistant and you only have to water it once a week. It thrives in low light and hates being over watered, just be careful because it can grow to be huge!

5. nerve plant

Tired of breathing the same air as your roommate? Well you’re in luck because this plant filters air and leaves your dorm room fresh. Native to South America, this plant is sensitive to direct light and can get leaf burn! So please keep this away from the window. Place this plant in pebbles and water, with frequent misting over the leaves once a day.
