The Ultimate Guide to Spring Cleaning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bowling Green chapter.

It’s hard to believe that spring is upon us once again, and with that comes spring cleaning. I feel that my age is definitely starting to show because instead of dreading this like usual, I’m looking forward to it! In this article, I hope to inspire you to reorganize and rejuvenate your bedroom space in just 5 simple steps.

Before I begin anything, I like to put together a bomb playlist that I know will make me feel good, and keep me energized throughout my next few hours. This is also a great time to listen to new albums, podcasts, or even audiobooks that you hadn’t previously had the time to listen to! Once you have that queued up, light a candle or if you’re in a dorm, throw in an essential oil that reminds you of spring in your diffuser!

Step 1

Making your bed is such a simple task, yet I often feel it gets overlooked in the cleaning process. By doing it first, it’ll give you a sense of accomplishment, which in turn gives you more motivation to continue. To get in the spring spirit you can even throw on some floral printed sheets, or anything pastel-colored. Inexpensive and cute throw blankets can often be found at stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls to give it that little extra touch.

Step 2

The next thing I like to do when I’m about to deep clean my room is go through my clothing. If I have any dirty laundry I like to toss it in at the beginning of my cleaning sesh, so that it’s done by the time the room is all clean. To make going through all of your clothes less overwhelming, do it in sections! For example, if you have a dresser, begin sorting and organizing things drawer by drawer or rack by rack in the closet. Separate it into piles of keep, donate/sell, and the “TBDs.” Later, when deciding what to do with clothing under that category, remember to wear the clothing, don’t let the clothes wear you! Besides, you can totally use this as an excuse to go shopping for all-new fits.

Step 3

Personally, this is my least favorite step- but it’s crucial to freshening up your space! You know those random junk drawers in your nightstand or that box of who-knows-what in your closet? It’s time to grab a trash bag, some antibacterial wipes, and maybe even some of those aesthetic drawer organizers (as seen in those aesthetic stay-at-home mom restock Tik Toks) and get organizing!

Step 4

After you have the floor space picked up, and surface areas temporarily cleared off dust it off and vacuum it up! To keep the spring vibes going, I like to use floral or citrus-scented cleaning spray. I feel that this adds more freshness and cleanliness to the room than you may think!

Step 5

Now, for the really fun part- decorating your updated space! There are so many ways to give your room a few new touches without breaking the bank. Some of my favorite places include the dollar spot at Target, thrift stores, 5 Below, and off-price retailers.

I hope after reading you’re feeling a little more motivated to freshen up your space for the new season!
