Curse words used to have a deeper meaning behind the explicit content in which they are used for now. As human beings we used the indignant terms to let out some frustration; in a steamy argument; or even when we feel like calling that one a**hole out of their name for cutting you off in traffic. Curse words or “profanity” whichever way you would like to classify these forbidden chosen words once upon a time was only used in certain circumstances. But in the world we live in today it seem as if curse words are now just apart of our everyday vocabulary.
On average just walking down the street or sitting in the hallways waiting for class to begin, I overhear plenty of conversations and I would say, at least hear a couple hundred curse words a day and if not more. The human population has incorporated these profound words into casual conversations, and most likely don’t even recognize that we’re cursing until somebody else brings it to our attention. These words just seem to roll of the tongue as if we learned these terms and definitions in school as a secondary language. Bustle.com stated “most of us will curse 80 times over the course of a day–more than three times per hour”. In other words we curse like “sailors” on a daily.
The question is; are these curse words subconsciously programmed in our brains? They just casually seem to replace the verbs, nouns, and pronouns in our regular sentence structure. I would say that profanity could now be deemed as our favorite use of adjectives when describing something or someone. When did we as a people become so vulgar? I remember when it was indecent to swear in front of older adults and even our parents, but now cursing is literally just a form of speaking to others. I mean as the old saying goes “do you kiss your mother with that mouth!”
